President William Ruto has nominated former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Wilson Sossion and Antonina Lentoijoni as members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The nominations, announced on Tuesday, have been forwarded to Parliament for consideration and approval in accordance with the Constitution and the relevant statutes.
In a statement issued by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, the Executive Office of the President said the appointments are intended to fill vacancies that arose earlier this year in constitutional commissions and statutory bodies.
"The following Presidential nominations have been transmitted to Parliament for consideration and approval in accordance with the Constitution and the relevant statutes," the statement said.
If approved by Parliament, Sossion and Lentoijoni will join the nine-member Teachers Service Commission, the constitutional body mandated to register teachers, recruit and employ educators in public schools, assign teachers to institutions and oversee disciplinary matters within the teaching service.
Sossion is a familiar figure in Kenya's education sector, having served for years as KNUT secretary general before later joining Parliament as a nominated MP.
Lentoijoni, meanwhile, has been nominated to serve alongside him as the second new commissioner.
The President also nominated Flora Mutua to serve as a member of the Public Service Commission, which is responsible for establishing and abolishing offices in the public service, appointing public officers and promoting values and principles of public administration.
The latest nominations come as the government moves to fill vacant positions in independent constitutional commissions to ensure continuity in their operations.
The appointments now await vetting by the relevant parliamentary committees before being debated and voted on by the National Assembly.
