Public health services across Kenya have been disrupted after thousands of healthcare workers downed their tools, accusing county governments of failing to employ 7,450 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) workers on permanent and pensionable terms despite funding and directives from the national government.
The nationwide strike, which began at midnight, has affected public health facilities in all 47 counties, with six medical unions also planning demonstrations outside Parliament and the Council of Governors (CoG) offices to pile pressure on county administrations.
The unions insist the strike will continue until county governments implement the agreed reforms and issue permanent and pensionable employment letters to all eligible UHC workers.
Mbadi to appear before Committee
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi is set to appear before the National Assembly’s Trade Committee over condemned raw sugar, at Bunge Towers.
This is after the Members of Parliament sought answers on the whereabouts of about 28,000 tonnes of sugar that was declared unfit for consumption, yet it left Mombasa.
The National Assembly Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives launched investigations into the handling of the sugar that was moved to Nairobi.
The legislators demanded answers from, among others, the Kenya Sugar Board (KSB), on how the consignment imported by Mombasa Sugar Refinery Limited and valued at around Sh1.5 billion left the port.
MPs have raised concerns that the sugar in question, which was flagged by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), may have found its way into the market, thus endangering the safety of consumers.

Albert Ojwang murder trial to resume
Albert Ojwang murder trial to resume at Kibera High Court.
The High Court on Monday heard testimony from a protected prosecution witness who said he was paid to erase CCTV footage from Central Police Station days after the death of detainee Albert Ojwang.
The witness, identified only as DAN, testified that he was instructed to format the station's Digital Video Recorder (DVR), effectively wiping surveillance footage recorded on June 6 and 7, 2025, because selective deletion of the recordings was not technically possible.
US launches fresh strikes on Iran
The US military says it launched another round of strikes against Iran to "further degrade" its capabilities to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strikes - the 10th consecutive night of attacks - come after US President Donald Trump vowed to punish Iran for the deaths of US soldiers.
Trump earlier said Iran had been hit "very hard" the previous night "in honour" of three US soldiers killed recently - two in Jordan and one in Iraq.
In response to the latest wave, Iran said it struck two oil tankers in the waterway, as well as US military assets in Bahrain and Kuwait, state news agency IRNA reported. President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was now fighting a "full-scale war" with the US.
