DCP jubilation hits Senate as allied senators arrive in coordinated party colours

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) took its celebrations from Ol Kalou to Parliament on Tuesday, with six senators allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua making a coordinated entrance into the Senate chambers dressed in matching party colours.

Murang'a Senator Joseph Nyutu, Kirinyaga Senator kamau murango, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua Nderitu and Kajiado Senator Kanar Seki arrived at Parliament wearing identical bright green blazers, white shirts and dusty rose ties, creating one of the most coordinated political fashion statements seen in the House in recent months.

The five walked shoulder to shoulder across Parliament grounds with confident strides, while some acknowledged supporters and colleagues by raising an index finger, a gesture commonly associated with victory and unity.

Their coordinated appearance came barely days after DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election by a landslide, a result the party has continued to celebrate as a sign of growing political momentum.

Inside the Senate chamber, the colourful arrival briefly shifted attention away from the day's proceedings.

As senators entered, lawmakers reacted by stamping their feet in approval, momentarily interrupting debate on the floor.

The interruptions prompted the senator who was on the floor, Mwenda Gataya, to appeal to the Speaker.

"Honourable Speaker, can you protect me from those interruptions?" Gataya said as the chamber broke into laughter, forcing a brief pause before proceedings resumed.

The appearance mirrored the celebratory mood that has characterised DCP activities since last week's by-election victory.

The matching green blazers also reflected the party's official colours, offering one of its clearest public visual displays inside Parliament since its formation.

Political parties have occasionally used coordinated dressing to project unity and solidarity, particularly following major political milestones or ahead of significant events.

For DCP leaders, the Ol Kalou outcome has been presented as more than the election of a single MP, with the party describing it as an important political breakthrough ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a party meeting in Ol Kalou, Gachagua dismissed criticism that DCP supporters were celebrating excessively, saying the victory represented a much bigger political message.

"The results of the by-election in Ol Kalou are one of the biggest political milestones in the Mountain," Gachagua said.

"I have seen Kenya Kwanza-allied politicians crying that we are celebrating too much because of one election. We are celebrating what it means and what it has proven for the country."

He argued that the by-election had demonstrated that voters could not be influenced solely by money or state power.

"There has been a perception that the government would buy the people of Kenya and get another term. We will continue to celebrate for a long time," he said.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election was won by DCP's Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, who garnered 35,440 votes against UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah's 5,450 votes, giving him a winning margin of 29,990 votes.

Tuesday's coordinated appearance by the five senators extended those celebrations to Parliament, where the party's colours became almost as much of a talking point as the day's legislative business, underscoring how DCP leaders continue to frame the Ol Kalou victory as an early political statement as they look ahead to the 2027 General Election.
