Detectives have recovered the head of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu, a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into her brutal murder, as the main suspect remains in custody to allow police to complete investigations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the recovery followed intensive interrogation of the suspect, who is being held after the Nyeri Law Courts granted detectives 21 days to continue with investigations.
According to the DCI, the suspect led investigators to an Estate in Nyeri Township, where the victim's head had allegedly been disposed of in a 20-foot-deep pit latrine within a residential compound.
The recovery operation involved a multi-agency team made up of detectives from the DCI Homicide Investigations Bureau and DCI Nyeri Central, forensic experts, officers from the National Government Administration Office, Nyeri Police Station and the Nyeri County Disaster and Rescue Team.
Investigators partially demolished the pit latrine before retrieving the victim's head, together with blood-stained clothing believed to be relevant to the case.
The recovered head was taken to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo a post-mortem examination. The clothing has been secured for forensic analysis as detectives continue gathering evidence.
The development came after the suspect appeared before the Nyeri Law Courts on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, where detectives successfully applied to have him detained for 21 days to allow them to complete investigations.
In a statement, the DCI said it remains committed to ensuring justice is served through professional investigations.
"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its pursuit of justice. We are committed to thorough, professional, and evidence-based investigations to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are held fully accountable before the courts," the agency said.
The DCI also expressed sympathy with the victim's family, saying: "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Joy Kanini Gathu during this difficult time."
The murder attracted widespread public attention after the victim's mutilated torso was discovered in an Estate in Nyeri in June. The body was found without the head, neck and limbs, prompting a homicide investigation.
The suspect was later arrested after being tracked down by DCI officers following weeks of investigations.
Prosecutors told the court he was a flight risk and sought more time to conclude inquiries, arguing that his release could interfere with witnesses and ongoing investigations.
The recovery of the victim's head is expected to provide investigators with crucial forensic evidence as they continue building the case. Detectives say investigations remain ongoing.
