Messi and Mbappé remain locked in a tight race for country and individual glory, separated by nothing more than the next decisive touch of brilliance.

The battle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title is no longer the tournament's only captivating storyline.

With just four teams left standing out of a record 48, another contest has reached boiling point — the race for the Golden Boot.

As the semi-finals kick off on Tuesday, the award for the tournament's top scorer has narrowed into a gripping duel between two of football's greatest forwards: Argentina captain Lionel Messi and France skipper Kylian Mbappé.

Both arrive at the last four level on eight goals, setting the stage for what could become one of the most memorable Golden Boot battles in World Cup history.

Norway's quarter-final exit at the hands of England ended Erling Haaland's challenge despite the striker finishing with seven goals, leaving Messi and Mbappé to fight for the prestigious individual honour.

England's Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham remain mathematical contenders on six goals apiece, although they now require an extraordinary finish to overhaul the two frontrunners.

Mbappé enters the semi-finals with a slight statistical advantage. Besides his eight goals, the France captain has produced three assists, taking his tournament tally to 11 direct goal contributions — the highest by any player at a single World Cup since Gerd Müller achieved the feat in 1970.

The French forward will have the first opportunity to seize outright control of the race when Les Bleus face Spain in Tuesday's semi-final.

A goal against the Spaniards would pile pressure on Messi, who leads Argentina against England 24 hours later.

Messi, however, is matching Mbappé stride for stride.

The Argentine icon has combined his eight goals with two assists and, in the process, became the first player in World Cup history to register 10 career assists in the competition.

His latest exploits have once again underlined why, even at this stage of his career, he remains one of football's defining figures.

Should the pair finish level on goals, FIFA's tiebreaking criteria could prove decisive.

The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the tournament.

If two or more players finish level, the winner is determined by the highest number of assists — a rule introduced by FIFA in 1994 to avoid shared winners.

Should goals and assists still fail to separate them, the award goes to the player who achieved those numbers in the fewest minutes played.

On this benchmark, Mbappé also holds the edge in efficiency. The Frenchman averages a goal contribution every 47 minutes in six appearences compared with Messi's 53.

Among England's challengers, Bellingham averages one every 74 minutes while Kane contributes one every 80 minutes.

The statistics capture the magnitude of what lies ahead – every touch, every chance and every finish over the next two matches could reshape football history.

While the long-standing record of 13 goals in a single World Cup, set by France's Just Fontaine in 1958, appears safely beyond reach, the race for this year's Golden Boot remains tantalisingly exciting.

The chase for football's most coveted individual scoring prize has become a compelling contest within the tournament itself ahead of the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

By the time the final whistle goes and the curtain falls on the historic tri-nation tournament, one player may lift the World Cup trophy, another may claim the Golden Boot, or one extraordinary individual could walk away with both.

For now, Messi and Mbappé remain locked in a tight race for country and individual glory, separated by nothing more than the next decisive touch of brilliance.
