The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has appealed to the public to stop circulating unverified information as police continue investigating the death of a student found dead in her hostel room at the institution's Nairobi Campus.

In a statement on Monday, the college said it was deeply saddened by the death of Ann Adhiambo Odhiambo, a Higher Diploma student in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Anaesthesia), who was found dead in her room on July 7.

"The passing has deeply saddened the college community, and our thoughts and prayers remain with her family, friends, fellow students and lecturers during this difficult time," KMTC said.

The institution said it immediately notified security agencies after the incident and has been cooperating fully with investigators by providing all the information and support required.

KMTC said a post-mortem examination was conducted on July 10 and the findings shared with the family. It added that it would continue supporting investigators until the inquiry is concluded.

"We respectfully appeal to members of the public to refrain from speculation or the circulation of unverified information, as this may cause additional distress to the bereaved family," the statement said.

The college said it remains in close contact with the family and will continue offering support during the mourning period.

Police are treating the death as a suspected murder and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the post-mortem findings, Ann died from multiple internal injuries.

Pathologists also documented black marks around her tongue, which they said could be consistent with oxygen deprivation, as well as bite marks on her abdomen and bloodstains around her nose. Detectives are investigating the significance of the findings.

Ann's father, Bafine Odhiambo, recalled learning of his daughter's death after being contacted by the family.

"They asked me if I was strong. I told them to just tell me the news, and I heard them break into a mourning song. My whole body then became weak. When we reached the mortuary, I saw the body of my only daughter, Ann. Last week she came home. It was her last time bidding me goodbye," he said.

Her mother, Getrude Akinyi, said Ann's roommate told the family she had gone for evening studies and returned to find the student lying near the door.

"The roommate said that she went for evening studies, and on coming back, she found Ann lying by the door, and when she touched her, she was cold," Akinyi said.
