The United States has issued a security alert advising its citizens in Kenya to remain vigilant on July 7, warning of a heightened security presence and possible disruptions linked to demonstrations across the country.

In the advisory issued on Tuesday, July 7, the US Embassy said demonstrations could occur nationwide, including in urban areas and Nairobi's Central Business District, urging American citizens to take precautionary measures.

The alert comes as Kenya marks Saba Saba, a day historically associated with pro-democracy protests that has, in recent years, also been marked by demonstrations over governance and economic issues.

According to the advisory, security agencies may increase their presence in affected areas, leading to security checkpoints, traffic disruptions and congestion.

"US citizens are advised that around July 7, there may be a heightened security presence," the embassy said.

It also cautioned that "demonstrations may occur at any time, especially in business districts and along key travel routes."

The embassy urged its citizens to avoid protests and large crowds, noting that such gatherings can change quickly and affect movement within cities.

Americans in Kenya were also encouraged to monitor local media for updates on the security situation and plan their movements accordingly.

The advisory further recommended that those travelling by road keep "doors locked and windows rolled up while in a vehicle" as a personal security precaution.

The embassy also asked US citizens to notify friends and family of their whereabouts and safety and to review their personal security plans.

In addition, American nationals were advised to carry a copy of their US passport together with a current Kenyan visa while moving around the country.

The advisory does not announce any specific threat but serves as a precautionary notice to help US citizens prepare for potential disruptions associated with public demonstrations.

Kenyan authorities have also maintained a heightened security presence in parts of the country ahead of the Saba Saba commemorations, with police warning against unlawful activities while urging demonstrators to remain peaceful.

The U.S advisory reflects concerns that public gatherings may affect transport, access to business districts and general movement, even where demonstrations remain peaceful.
