A peaceful procession to mark this year's Saba Saba Day commemorations in Mombasa was briefly disrupted after protesters engaged in a confrontation with security officers over the route to be followed through the Central Business District.

The standoff erupted after police stopped the demonstrators and attempted to redirect the procession, insisting that the group use a different route.

The move was resisted by the protesters, leading to a tense face-off between the two sides.

Despite the confrontation, there were no reports of injuries or arrests, and the situation was later brought under control.

The annual Saba Saba commemorations draw Kenyans from across the country to reflect on the nation's democratic journey while advocating for improved governance, accountability and the protection of fundamental rights.

Observed every year on July 7, Saba Saba marks one of the most significant milestones in Kenya's political history. The day traces its origins to July 7, 1990, when thousands of Kenyans defied a government ban to demand the restoration of multiparty democracy, political freedoms and greater respect for human rights during the administration of former President Daniel Moi.

Although the demonstrations were met with a heavy security crackdown, they became a turning point in Kenya's democratic struggle, eventually leading to the repeal of Section 2A of the Constitution in 1991 and the reintroduction of multiparty politics.

Over the years, Saba Saba has evolved beyond commemorating the pro-democracy movement to become a symbol of civic participation and the continued pursuit of accountable leadership.

Civil society organisations, political leaders, youth groups and human rights activists have consistently used the occasion to call for constitutionalism, social justice, economic inclusion and an end to corruption and police brutality.

This year's commemorations took place amid heightened security in several parts of the country, with authorities closely monitoring planned demonstrations as Kenyans gathered to honour the legacy of the country's democracy movement while voicing contemporary governance concerns.
