The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has expressed profound grief following the murder of advocate Edward Muthee Kariuki, whose body was found outside his residence in Athi River, Machakos County, on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
In a statement, LSK President Charles Kanjama described the killing as a "heinous act" and a dark moment for both the legal profession and the country, while calling on investigators to move with speed in bringing those responsible to justice.
"This heinous act is a dark moment for the profession and the nation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider legal fraternity," Kanjama said.
"We call upon the authorities to conduct thorough, swift, and impartial investigations, and urge anyone with information to come forward in the pursuit of justice."
The Society said Muthee, who practised under the name Edward Kariuki Law Advocates with offices along Kiambu Road, was found murdered outside his residence in Athi River.
LSK noted that the incident casts "a grim shadow on the state's duty to protect the lives of its citizens" and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the circumstances surrounding the advocate's death are fully established.
"The Law Society of Kenya, through its Lawyer-Police Liaison Committee, is in close contact with the family and is actively following up on the ongoing investigations with the relevant authorities. The Society undertakes to continue giving updates," the statement said.
"The Society reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring that the truth surrounding this tragic incident is established and that those responsible are held to account."
Meanwhile, detectives have launched investigations into the killing of the 30-year-old advocate.
According to police, the incident was reported on Sunday morning after a security guard on duty noticed an unresponsive man lying outside the estate and alerted authorities.
Officers from Athi River Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel, visited the scene and commenced investigations.
Police later identified the deceased as Edward Kariuki Muthee, the proprietor of Edward Kariuki Law Firm located along Kiambu Road. He was also a resident of Strawberry Estate in Athi River.
Investigators said the motive behind the murder remains unknown and no arrests had been announced by the time of publishing.
The killing has sent shockwaves through Kenya's legal fraternity, with colleagues and members of the Bar mourning the loss of a young advocate whose career was cut short.
The incident also renews concerns over the safety of legal practitioners and the broader issue of violent crime, with LSK urging authorities to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the circumstances surrounding Muthee's death.
As investigations continue, the Society has pledged to work
closely with law enforcement agencies and the bereaved family to ensure justice
is served.
