The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has strengthened its partnership with the Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) in a renewed push to promote drug-free lifestyles among young people.
The commitment was reaffirmed during the 2026 Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions held at the Kenya Scouts Association Headquarters, Rowallan Scouts Camp, in Nairobi County.
Speaking during the event, the NACADA Board Chair said youth organisations such as the Kenya Scouts Association play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens and reducing young people's vulnerability to alcohol and drug abuse.
He said the scouting movement has remained one of the country's most effective platforms for instilling discipline, integrity, leadership and service among young people.
According to the Board Chair, these values help shield young people from the dangers associated with alcohol and substance abuse.
"The Kenya Scouts Association has, for generations, nurtured disciplined, responsible and patriotic young people. These are the same values that protect our youth from the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse. Prevention begins by empowering young people with the right information, positive role models and opportunities to develop their full potential," he said.
He warned that alcohol and drug abuse continues to threaten the health, education and future productivity of many young people, making preventive interventions increasingly important.
The Board Chair urged Scouts to become ambassadors of prevention by making responsible decisions and encouraging their peers to do the same.
"Leadership begins with personal choices. Every decision you make today shapes the person you will become tomorrow. I encourage every Scout to choose purpose over peer pressure and become a champion for a drug-free Kenya," he said.
As part of the event, NACADA officers conducted preventive education sessions and held interactive discussions with participants.
They also distributed information, education and communication materials to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.
The authority said the activities were aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge needed to make healthy and informed decisions while resisting substance use.
NACADA also recognised the role played by Scout leaders, teachers and parents in mentoring young people. It said strong family and community support remains one of the most effective protective factors against substance use among adolescents.
The Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions bring together Scouts from across the country to demonstrate leadership, teamwork, discipline and practical skills while promoting patriotism and personal development.
NACADA said it will continue working closely with the Kenya Scouts Association and other youth-focused organisations to expand evidence-based prevention programmes.
The authority said the collaboration is part of its broader strategy of using established youth platforms to build resilient communities and advance the national campaign against alcohol and drug abuse among children and young people.
