Dry weather/AI
Dry weather is expected to prevail across most parts of the country over the weekend, even as the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) forecasts localised rainfall, intermittent cold conditions and strong winds in selected regions.
In its latest daily weather update for July 3 and 4, Met said most areas will experience dry conditions, with rainfall confined to some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley.
The weatherman also warned that occasional cloudy and cold conditions are likely over sections of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley.
Intermittent cloudy and cold conditions are expected over some
parts of Highlands West and East of the Rift valley.
"Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Makueni, Kitui and the coastal counties," the department said.
However, some regions will continue to receive rainfall, according to the latest seven day forecast.
"Rainfall is mainly expected over the Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western and Central Kenya," the department observed.
The update is in line with the department's weekly forecast covering June 30 to July 6, which projects rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley and the Coast.
According to the forecast, occasional morning rains are expected in parts of western Kenya, followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms in isolated areas.
Some places could also receive showers at night.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi counties, mornings are expected to be cloudy throughout the forecast period, with occasional rainfall in a few areas before giving way to sunny intervals.
Afternoon and night showers are also likely over isolated areas.
Elsewhere, the north-eastern and south-eastern parts of the country are expected to remain largely sunny during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night.
Kenya Met said daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius are expected in parts of the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya, while some highland areas will continue experiencing chilly nights.
"Night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in a few areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and in the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro," Kenya Met stated.
The department said the changing weather pattern underscores the varied climatic conditions expected across the country during the period, with dry weather remaining the dominant feature despite isolated rainfall in some regions.
Residents in areas expected to experience strong winds have been advised to remain vigilant, while those in regions forecast to receive rainfall should prepare for possible afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
The weather outlook comes as Kenya continues to experience its cool season, characterised by cold mornings and evenings in the highlands, occasional rainfall in parts of the country and warmer conditions across the arid and coastal regions.
