Detectives have arrested a man suspected of involvement in a string of violent robberies in Malindi and Mombasa after tracking him down following weeks of surveillance.

The suspect was arrested by detectives from Malindi Police Station over his alleged role in a robbery with violence that occurred in Mombasa on June 11, 2026.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect allegedly hired a Toyota Fielder in Malindi before using it as a getaway vehicle during the robbery.

Investigators said the suspect later changed the vehicle's registration plate in what they believe was an attempt to conceal the car's identity and evade arrest.

"This crafty criminal hired a Toyota Fielder in Malindi, only to transform it into a getaway car for his criminal escapades," the DCI said in a statement.

Despite the alleged attempt to cover his tracks, detectives mounted sustained surveillance that eventually led them to the suspect's hideout in the Kwachocha area of Malindi, where he was arrested.

During the operation, officers recovered a knife and a black handbag containing cannabis sativa, items that were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

"The long arm of the law was undeterred. Thanks to relentless surveillance, detectives trailed him to his hideout in the Kwachocha area of Malindi, where they arrested him," the DCI said.

The suspect remains in police custody and is undergoing processing before being arraigned in court.

The recovered items have been taken into police custody for forensic examination as investigators continue pursuing additional leads to establish whether the suspect is linked to other robbery incidents in the region.

The DCI has urged members of the public to continue reporting criminal activities anonymously through its toll-free hotline and WhatsApp reporting channels as investigations into the case continue.

Kenyans can call the toll-free number 0800 722 203 or send a WhatsApp message to 0709 570 000 to share information confidentially and support efforts to combat crime
