The Kenyan Embassy in Kinshasa has appealed to all Kenyan nationals residing in four Central African countries to register with the mission formally.
In a public notice, the embassy said the exercise aims to enhance the delivery of consular and emergency services to citizens living abroad.
"Registration enables the embassy to serve you better," the notice said.
It called on Kenyans living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and Gabon to register with the embassy at the earliest opportunity.
“The Embassy of Kenya kindly requests all Kenyan nationals residing in the above-listed countries to formally register with the embassy,” the notice stated.
Embassies play a major role in supporting citizens living, working, studying, or travelling abroad.
Registration allows diplomatic missions to quickly establish contact with nationals during emergencies such as civil unrest, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, armed conflicts, or evacuation exercises.
According to the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, Kenyan embassies and high commissions abroad are mandated to articulate Kenya's Foreign Policy and advance national interests globally.
Their core responsibilities span economic diplomacy (promoting trade and investment), consular services for the diaspora, and fostering bilateral and multilateral relations.
According to Kenya's Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, the Kenyan Embassy in Kinshasa is mandated to represent Kenya's interests and provide consular services to citizens residing in the countries under its jurisdiction.
Kenya maintains one resident diplomatic mission in Central Africa, established in 1967 and located in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The embassy is also accredited to the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and Gabon, making it the country's primary diplomatic and consular hub in the region.
Through this arrangement, the mission oversees bilateral relations and provides support to Kenyan nationals living, working and travelling across the four countries.
Among other services offered by Kenyan embassies abroad are the issuance of emergency travel documents, assistance with passport applications and renewals, certification of official documents, registration of births and deaths involving Kenyan citizens, and support to nationals facing legal or medical emergencies.
Embassies also assist Kenyans who may lose their travel documents, require repatriation in exceptional circumstances, or need guidance on local laws and procedures in their host countries.
In addition, diplomatic missions serve as a link between the Kenyan government and citizens abroad by disseminating important information, facilitating participation in national programmes and helping coordinate responses during crises affecting Kenyans overseas.
