A memorial service for veteran football commentator Paul Kaberia, popularly known as Diblo El Mago, was held on Thursday at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, where family, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate his life and legacy.

The service, held at 2 pm, brought together members of the sporting fraternity who continue to mourn the celebrated broadcaster, remembered as one of Kenya’s most distinctive football voices.

Kaberia, who worked as a commentator at Radio Jambo for more than 20 years, was widely praised for his energetic match commentary, sharp wit and deep understanding of the game.

His signature catchphrases and lively storytelling made him a household name among football fans across the country.

In a message shared with colleagues ahead of the service, mourners were encouraged to attend and stand with the family during the difficult period.

“We encourage all those who are able to attend to join the family, friends and colleagues in celebrating his life and legacy,” the notice read.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the sports industry, with colleagues describing him as a dedicated broadcaster whose voice defined key moments in Kenyan football coverage.

At Radio Africa Group, Human Resource Manager Jemima Ngode announced Kaberia’s passing last week, describing him as a committed professional whose passion for football endeared him to listeners nationwide.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our colleague, Mr Paul Kaberia, football commentator at Radio Jambo for over 20 years,” she said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.”

Beyond commentary, Kaberia was also credited with mentoring upcoming sports journalists and helping shape sports broadcasting in both vernacular and mainstream radio.

He built a loyal following over the years through his engaging analysis and passionate delivery, becoming one of the most recognisable voices in Kenyan sports radio.
