Heavy rains have caused flooding at the Kipsonoi River Bridge in Mugeni, rendering a key section of the Kaplong-Kisii (B6) Road unsafe for vehicles, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.
In a traffic advisory issued on Saturday, March 21, KeNHA said the flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall in upstream areas, which led to a significant rise in water levels at the bridge located between Sotik and Chebilat.
Motorists are being urged to exercise caution and follow instructions from police officers and traffic marshals stationed at the site.
The authority emphasized that the section is unsafe for motorable traffic until further notice.
To reduce disruption, KeNHA provided alternative routes.
Motorists traveling to Chebilat and Keroka are advised to use the Kaplong-Sotik-Roret-Ikonge-Chebilat-Keroka route, while those heading to Kisii should take the Kaplong-Sotik-Roret-Ikonge-Kisii route. Both alternatives are paved roads.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution and strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety,” the advisory reads.
KeNHA said it is closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary action if water levels continue to rise.
The authority thanked the public for their cooperation as it works to safeguard road users.
The Director-General of KeNHA, Eng. Luka Kimeli, stressed the importance of adhering to the recommended routes and observing traffic instructions.
He noted that safety remains the priority and that the authority will respond promptly to changing conditions at the bridge.
This alert comes amid ongoing heavy rains across parts of the region, raising concerns about road safety and the potential for further flooding in low-lying areas.
Motorists are being encouraged to plan travel carefully and allow extra time for detours where necessary.
KeNHA has assured the public that it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve.
Motorists are advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel through the flooded area, and follow official guidance to prevent accidents and ensure their safety while the bridge remains affected.
