Suspects are in custody awaiting arraignment

Two suspected drug peddlers have been arrested in Utange, Mombasa county after a raid by detectives.

DCI said the suspects were found in their hideout at a residential house fenced by a large perimeter wall in Barawa, Kisauni subcounty.

“In a coordinated raid, officers drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and Kiembeni police station arrested the two, bringing their alleged trade to a halt,” DCI said.

The multi-agency team coordinated its raid based on its intel and conducted a thorough sweep of the building in search of drugs and recovered several heroin sachets hidden in two bedrooms.

Further search revealed another package of heroin at a corner of the building’s compound. The package was buried in a hole in case of a potential drug search.

“By the end of the operation, officers had recovered 1,346 grammes of heroin with an estimated street value of Sh4,092,000, alongside a digital weighing machine and a drying machine, evidence of a well-oiled illicit business,” DCI said.

The two suspects are now being detained by the police and await arraignment in court as the authorities conduct further investigation.

Police have urged members of the public to report any criminal activities via 0800 722 203 (toll-free) or anonymously via WhatsApp on 0709570000.

The crackdown comes days after police officers in Meru nabbed two suspected traffickers and recovered a substantial haul of cannabis sativa.

“Acting on a tip-off, the officers conducted a raid on a rental house located in the municipality area, in the Mwiteria sublocation. Upon entering the premises, they uncovered 22kg of bhang and 440 rolls, all valued at approximately Sh630,000 in the streets,” DCI revealed.

“The operation also yielded rolling papers, a digital weighing scale, 38 black courier bags and a National Youth Service smoke jacket, among other incriminating items.”

The two suspects – men in their early twenties –  were arrested and their items impounded and are currently in police custody.

The DCI has said it will stay committed to its unrelenting battle against narcotics and trafficking networks in the Kenyan streets.
