The tragedy occurred after a herder threw a piece of wood while controlling his cows and fatally hit the girl, who was nearby.
Police said the Form Two student died in hospital, where she had been admitted following the incident in Musese village on December 12, 2025.
The herdsman was arrested over the death, and police said they are investigating the case as murder.
He told police he was controlling cows that had strayed into a maize plantation when he picked up a piece of wood and threw it at one of the animals.
However, he missed the target and struck the girl, who was coincidentally in the maize plantation.
She screamed for help and collapsed before being taken to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on December 13, police said.
Police visited the scene and recovered the piece of wood as part of the investigations.
The girl’s body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
In Nyamasaria area, Kisumu County, a one-year-old child drowned in a pool of water near the family’s home.
The toddler’s family said she wandered from the house to the spot where she drowned.
The body was later moved to a local mortuary pending an autopsy, after hours of persuasion by police. The family had initially declined to release the body due to the cost of preservation and the autopsy.
Police said they are investigating the Sunday incident.
Elsewhere in Misikhu, Bungoma County, a man was stabbed and killed in a love triangle incident.
The deceased was identified as Joseph Wafula, 19.
He was stabbed in the stomach and later died in hospital following an altercation with another man over a woman on December 14, police said.
Wafula had left his Kibisi village for Kewa to meet his girlfriend when the incident occurred.
Witnesses said he found the woman standing with another man. When he questioned why they were together, the assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the left hip before fleeing the scene, leaving Wafula bleeding on the ground.
Police said he was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police said on Monday they were pursuing the suspect for questioning and possible arraignment on murder charges.
Murder cases have been on the rise amid efforts by police to address the trend.
