The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Cabinet minister and Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a prominent and influential figure in the country’s political history.

In a condolence message issued on Saturday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the party had received the news of Jirongo’s death “with deep sorrow,” noting that his passing had been felt across the political divide.

“On behalf of the ODM Party, and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Hon. Jirongo, his friends, associates, and the people of Lugari and Western Kenya, whom he served with commitment and distinction,” Sifuna said.

Jirongo served as Member of Parliament for Lugari between 1997 and 2002, and again from 2007 to 2013. He also held a Cabinet position during his political career.

ODM noted that Jirongo played a significant role in the National Super Alliance (NASA), a coalition that brought together key opposition leaders ahead of the 2017 General Election.

He was remembered for his bold approach to politics, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his active engagement in national affairs.

“His engagement in public life, whether in government, party politics, or business, left an indelible mark on our nation’s political landscape,” the party said.

ODM said Jirongo’s influence extended beyond elective politics, shaping debates and political organisation during critical moments in the country’s democratic journey.

“At this moment of grief, we stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and all those mourning his loss,” Sifuna said.

The party also offered prayers for the family. “We pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and peace as they come to terms with this profound loss,” the statement said.

ODM concluded by wishing Jirongo eternal rest.

Jirongo died Saturday morning following a road accident that occurred in the Karai area, Naivasha, Nakuru County.

His friends and relatives said Jirongo was driving himself to his rural home in Lugari, Kakamega, when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a bus.

Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo said the crash happened at around 3:00 a.m. December 13, 2025, along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

He was alone at the time.

Reports indicate he was driving back to Nairobi when the accident happened. Police said they are investigating the incident. His car was badly damaged.
