President Donald Trump once again shared his admiration for press secretary Karoline  Leavitt as he spoke at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump travelled to Mount Pocono on Tuesday to deliver a speech about the economy - but he quickly veered off topic when he stopped to praise Leavitt's appearance and prowess at the White House podium.

'We even brought our superstar today, Karoline,' the 79-year-old commander-in-chief told the MAGA faithful in the crowd, who burst out in cheers.

'Isn't Karoline great?' he asked, rhetorically.

'You know, when she goes on television, Fox, like I mean, they dominate, they dominate when she gets up there with that beautiful face and those lips that don't stop-op-op-op, like a little machine gun,' the president continued, offering his own sound effects.

'She's got no fear... because we have the right policy,' Trump then said.

'We don't have men in women's sports... we don't have to sell transgender to everybody, we don't have to sell open borders where the world is allowed to come into our country from prisons and everywhere else - so she's got a little bit [of an] easier job.

'I wouldn't want to be the other side's press secretary,' the president chided the Democrats.

Brandon Wolf, the national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, rebuked the president for failing to stay on message.

'Trump's speech was supposed to be about the economy, but somehow it's just... a weird obsession with trans people, a racist word salad and something about Karoline Leavitt's lips??' he wrote.

'Meanwhile, prices aren't getting any lower.'

But this was not the first time that Trump made odd remarks about his 29-year-old press secretary's looks.

In October, the president made reference to Leavitt's 'face... and those lips,' which he told reporters aboard Air Force One 'move like a machine gun.'

He also made the bizarre analogy during an August interview with Newsmax.

'She's become a star. It's that face. It's that brain. It's those lips, the way they move,' Trump said at the time.

'They move like she's a machine gun,' the president continued.

Leavitt has been working with Trump for many years.

She initially joined the office of presidential correspondence, helping process and reply to incoming mail, after graduating from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire in 2019.

From there, she joined the communications team under former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany towards the end of Trump's first term.

When he left office, she went to work for high-profile New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, before making her own run for Congress in New Hampshire, the state where she grew up scooping ice cream at her parents' store.

Her effort to become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress fell 15,000 votes short in the 2022 midterms, when an expected red wave failed to materialise.

She was back in the Trump fold within weeks, joining an allied group before linking up with the campaign itself earlier this year, becoming Trump's national press secretary and quickly becoming a fixture on television.

The youngest White House press secretary in American history has largely kept her private life out of the spotlight, but revealed that she met her husband, Nicholas Riccio, while running for Congress in 2022.
