Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has celebrated a major milestone in the life of his adopted son, Gift Osinya, who graduated from Scott Christian University in Machakos.
In an emotional tribute, Sonko described Gift’s journey from tragedy to triumph as nothing short of divine intervention.
“See God! The God of miracles. The God of second chances,” Sonko wrote.
"The same God who held Gift and Satrine when darkness tried to swallow them. If this is not God, then what is?”
Gift and his younger brother Satrine captured national attention in 2014 after surviving a brutal Al-Shabaab attack at a church in Likoni.
The attack resulted in six deaths, including their mother.
Satrine was left with a bullet lodged in his head, a moment that deeply moved the country.
Gift, who was just 13 years old at the time, displayed remarkable bravery by carrying his bleeding brother out of the church to safety.
Satrine was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where a team of neurosurgeons performed a delicate operation to successfully remove the bullet lodged in his head.
Following the tragic incident, which captured the attention and sympathy of the nation, Sonko stepped in and adopted the two boys.
He took charge of their medical treatment, rehabilitation, education, and overall welfare, integrating them fully into his family and ensuring they received the care and stability they needed.
Reflecting on their painful past, Sonko noted the brothers’ extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming loss.
“Many remember their story: tragedy struck, Satrine was shot in the head by Al-Shabab, and young Gift stood strong like a lion,” he said.
"God spared them, healed them, lifted them, and rebuilt their lives from ashes.”
Sonko recalled the horrific day tragedy struck, noting that even in the darkest moment, the boys displayed remarkable resilience.
“Many remember their story: tragedy struck, Satrine was shot in the head by Al-Shabab, and young Gift stood strong like a lion,” he said.
“God spared them, healed them, lifted them, and rebuilt their lives from ashes.”
Years later, after extensive treatment, healing, and the stability of a new home, Gift has now completed his university studies, an achievement Sonko described as a fulfilment of God’s purpose.
“To survive that storm and stand here today is nothing short of divine,” Sonko said.
“Gift’s journey is living proof that God still performs wonders.”
He expressed pride in his son and encouraged him to embrace the next chapter with confidence.
“Gift, my son, we are proud. This is just the beginning. God’s hand is on you, and every dream He placed in you will come to pass," he added.
