Israeli embassy in Kenya issues Tanzania travel alert to citizens ahead of December 9 protests

Israel's embassy in Kenya has issued an urgent travel advisory for Tanzania following violent demonstrations, widespread public disturbances, and severe disruptions that erupted after the country’s October 29, 2025, elections.

The situation, officials warn, is expected to escalate again with additional protests anticipated around December 9, particularly in central regions, with unrest possibly beginning several days earlier.

According to the advisory, the post-election turmoil has triggered violent street clashes, roadblocks, curfews, and a near-complete shutdown of internet networks, alongside significant disruptions to air, road, and local transport systems.

Authorities caution that temporary airport closures cannot be ruled out.

“Violent clashes in the streets may endanger bystanders,” the embassy notes, adding that communication blackout, especially online, could intensify as the situation unfolds.

Security forces have strengthened their presence in major towns and cities, and further disturbances are expected as political tensions rise in the run-up to the December protests.

The Ministry is advising Israeli citizens currently in Tanzania to keep a low profile and take heightened precautions.

They are urged to avoid areas of friction and large gatherings, strictly follow instructions issued by Tanzanian security agencies, and monitor developments through reliable media sources.

Travellers are also encouraged to stock up on essential supplies, including food, water, medicines, and cash, in case movement is restricted.

The advisory further warns visitors to observe Tanzanian laws: sharing photos or videos that may cause public panic is a criminal offense.

For those planning to visit Tanzania in the coming days, the Ministry strongly recommends postponing non-essential travel until calm returns and the political situation stabilises.

The Israeli Embassy accredited to Tanzania operates from Nairobi, Kenya.

In case of emergency, Israelis in Tanzania can reach the embassy’s emergency line at +254-110150031 or the Ministry’s Situation Room in Jerusalem at +972-53-031-55.

The Ministry said it will continue monitoring the situation and issue updates as needed.

Tanzania is bracing for renewed unrest as fresh demonstrations are expected to erupt on December 9, deepening tensions that have gripped the country since the disputed October 29, 2025 elections.

The unrest could begin several days earlier, with security forces already deployed in major towns and cities amid fears of escalating violence.

The post-election fallout has triggered weeks of turmoil, marked by violent street clashes, widespread public disturbances, and the shutdown of internet services that crippled communication nationwide.

Transport systems were severely disrupted, with roadblocks reported on key routes and concerns that airports could face temporary closure should tensions intensify.
