Kwanza Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi / HANDOUT

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has clarified the health status of Kwanza Member of Parliament Ferdinand Wanyonyi amid rumours of his demise.

On Thursday, Wetang’ula told the House that Wanyonyi, who had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital for about a month, was transferred to India for specialised treatment on the recommendation of his doctors.

“I also want to inform the House that the Honourable Ferdinand Wonyoni, the Member for Kwanza, is currently unwell. He was admitted to Nairobi Hospital for about a month, and doctors recommended that he be taken to India for further treatment. He is now in India,” the Speaker said.

“Yesterday, I had a conference call with him and his spouse, who accompanied him. This morning, the Clerk also communicated with him. I am sharing this to address malicious rumours circulating in his constituency suggesting that he has passed away.”

The Speaker condemned individuals spreading malicious rumours about Wanyonyi’s health, calling such actions wicked and unnecessary.

“He is in a hospital in India, responding well to treatment, and is there with his wife and daughter. I have personally communicated with him,” Wetang’ula said.

He reminded Members of Parliament that health challenges can affect anyone and called for empathy instead of speculation.

Wetang’ula’s clarification follows a series of misleading messages.

Ferdinand Wanyonyi is the current Member of Parliament for Kwanza Constituency in Trans Nzoia County.

He has held the seat since being first elected in the 2013 general elections under the FORD-Kenya Party and successfully retained it in both the 2017 and 2022 polls.

Wanyonyi’s educational journey began at Misikhu Primary School in Webuye, where he earned his Certificate of Primary Education.

He proceeded to Kibabii High School for his O Level studies and later attended Maseno School for A Level education.

He then joined the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in Economics.

His academic focus on education and economic governance laid the foundation for his policy-driven approach in public service.

In March 2013, Wanyonyi transitioned to elective politics and secured the MP seat for Kwanza Constituency.

Throughout his parliamentary career, he has been actively involved in shaping national and constituency development policies.

He has served on the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock and the National Government Constituencies Development Committee, contributing to initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity and local development.

Wanyonyi’s tenure in Parliament has been marked by his commitment to education, economic policy, and community development, reflecting the priorities he championed even before entering elective politics.
