Kenya has strengthened its global standing in the ICT sector after being elected vice Chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).

The election took place at the ongoing World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking yet another milestone for the country’s growing influence in international digital governance.

Fred Ong’aro, Deputy Director for Fund Strategy Coordination at the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), was elected to represent Africa in TDAG, a critical advisory organ within the ITU Development Sector (ITU-D).

His election positions Kenya at the heart of global decision-making on digital development.

It allows the country to play a leading role in shaping ICT policies, mobilising resources, and accessing global best practices.

This marks the second time Kenya is holding the TDAG Vice Chair position, underscoring its consistency and credibility in international ICT leadership.

The WTDC, convened every four years, serves as the ITU’s premier forum for setting global priorities for ICT development.

It brings together governments, regulators, private-sector players, and development partners to craft strategies and programmes that accelerate digital transformation, expand meaningful connectivity, build capacity, and reduce the digital divide, especially in developing nations.

Kenya’s election is widely seen as a testament to the country’s strong technical expertise, policy leadership, and longstanding contribution to advancing inclusive digital growth.

It also reinforces the Communications Authority’s expanding role in fostering ICT innovations and championing digital inclusion across the region.

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, together with Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, led Kenya’s delegation to the WTDC.

Their engagement highlighted Kenya’s commitment to influencing international ICT priorities, strengthening partnerships, and pushing for increased support to accelerate digital inclusion and connectivity.

During high-level discussions and bilateral meetings, the CS and PS reiterated Kenya’s readiness to collaborate closely with the ITU and other member states to advance initiatives that expand broadband access, promote innovation, and support sustainable technological growth.

Their presence also demonstrated Kenya’s determination to contribute meaningfully to global conversations on emerging technologies, capacity building, and digital policy.

“This recognition strengthens our resolve to work closely with the ITU and member states in advancing programmes that support innovation, expand connectivity, and accelerate digital transformation across the region," said Kabogo.

Through the WTDC platform, Kenya continues to shape international programmes that enhance connectivity, foster ICT innovation, and address the unique needs of developing countries, further cementing its role as a continental and global leader in digital development.
