Gospel Musician Betty Bayo's mother Joyce Mbugua / ScreengrabThe mother of gospel artist Betty Bay has delivered a deeply emotional tribute, painting a heartbreaking picture of a daughter whose faith and love shaped everyone around her.
Bayo passed away on Monday, November 10, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). She had been battling blood cancer (leukaemia).
Bayo’s mother, Joyce Mbugua, described her as a devoted Christian whose faith anchored her from childhood into adulthood.
The mother recalled introducing Betty to Christianity at a young age and watching her grow into a committed believer.
“I want to pour out my heart regarding my dear girl Betty. Being my last born, my memories are so recent and fresh. No mother should ever have to go through this experience. But Betty, you love the Lord and I introduced you to Him as a small girl. I say what you could have said—it’s God’s will,” she said during the memorial service on Sunday.
Mbugua remembered Betty’s early passion for worship, noting that she never shied away from joining others at the altar in praise and worship.
She reflected on raising her through school and college, where she studied journalism, and the moment Betty revealed that she often heard melodies within her.
“I remember when you shared with me that you kept hearing songs within you. I encouraged you to seek God, and after we prayed together, I had a confirmation which I shared with you—that you had a gift in you, and we continued to seek God,” she said.
She also recounted how Betty supported her as her ministry grew, even urging her to relocate from the countryside.
“You took me from the village, where I lived with you until I personally requested that you let me go. You hesitated, but we finally agreed. You didn’t stop there—you built a modern home for me to ensure my life was comfortable,” she said.
“Later, you suggested that I travel to America, where I’m currently based. Your life may have been short, but you beautified mine more than I could ever imagine. I know even in your grief, you were still concerned about me.”
Mbugua expressed her deep affection for Betty’s children, Sky and Danny, saying they hold a special place in her heart.
“When I see you, I remember her. Grandma loves you beyond what words can express. Go well, my dear Betty—forever in my heart.”
Betty Bayo rose to prominence in Kenya’s gospel scene through her distinctive vocal style, deep spirituality, and relatable songwriting that resonated widely with Christian audiences.
Over the years, she built a loyal following and became one of the standout voices in contemporary gospel music.
Her songs, many centred on hope, restoration, and personal testimony, remain widely appreciated within gospel circles.
