Ongoing construction of a overpass near Junction Mall/ KURA

A section of Ngong Road in Nairobi will be closed tonight to facilitate ongoing construction of a flyover near the Junction Mall, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced.

In a public notice, the authority said the temporary closure, which takes effect from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., will enable the movement of heavy machinery and other preparatory works for the erection of the new overpass structure.

“KURA wishes to notify the general public of a temporary road closure along Ngong Road around the Junction Mall area today, Monday, 10th November 2025, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.,” the notice reads in part.

According to the statement, only one lane will be closed to allow the contractor to conduct a demonstration of heavy machinery maneuverability in preparation for the major erection phase of the project.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and follow the instructions of traffic marshals on site. KURA has also apologized for any inconvenience caused, saying the closure is necessary to ensure safety and efficiency during the operation.

The authority further cautioned that the road will experience additional traffic disruptions over a three-week period beginning November 18 to December 10, 2025, to allow for the erection of the steel structure forming part of the new flyover.

“The works will be carried out between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily, except on Sundays,” the statement said.

During the construction period, traffic will be diverted between the Nairobi City County Training School and Kenya Science Campus, where the section will temporarily accommodate two-way traffic.

Motorists have been urged to observe all traffic signs and cooperate with police officers and marshals deployed to manage flow along the busy corridor.

This development comes months after KURA announced plans to construct footbridges along the Ngong Road–Karen Road corridor following public concerns over pedestrian safety.

Residents had questioned why footbridges were not included in the original road design despite the high number of pedestrians using the route daily.

In a statement issued in July, KURA assured the public that pedestrian infrastructure was being addressed as part of broader road safety improvements. “Plans are currently underway to install footbridges as part of efforts to enhance pedestrian safety along the section,” the authority said on X.

Ngong Road remains one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors, serving thousands of motorists and pedestrians each day. The ongoing works are part of efforts to ease congestion and enhance connectivity between the city and Karen, Dagoretti, and Ngong areas.

The closure also comes days after KURA temporarily shut Jamuhuri Road to allow for the construction of key drainage and sewerage infrastructure linked to the Talanta Sports City Project at Jamuhuri Sports Grounds.

According to KURA Director General Silas Kinoti, Jamuhuri Road remained closed for at least three days before being reopened to traffic.

KURA has reiterated its commitment to minimizing disruption and ensuring that ongoing infrastructure works contribute to a safer and more efficient urban transport network.
