
Police in Kwale have arrested a suspected drug trafficker after intercepting a vehicle believed to have been transporting a consignment of bhang along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway.
According to officers at Samburu Police Station, the arrest followed a tip-off from the residents on Tuesday.
Police mounted surveillance near a steel plant area, where they spotted a vehicle suspected to be ferrying narcotics.
The occupants of the car reportedly attempted to flee when the vehicle was flagged down. One suspect managed to escape, while another was apprehended at the scene.
Upon inspection, officers discovered several sacks of bhang concealed in the boot of the vehicle. The drugs are believed to have been packaged for distribution to markets along the major highway.
Police said the suspect is currently being held at Samburu Police Station, where he is being processed ahead of arraignment. The vehicle and the seized narcotics have been detained and recorded as exhibits.
A manhunt has been launched for the second suspect who fled, with detectives urging Kenyans to volunteer any information that may assist in his arrest.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to disrupting drug trafficking networks operating along key transit routes.

At the same time, police officers in Mtwapa, Kilifi South Sub-County, arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for a series of thefts in Mtwapa Township, following an intelligence-led operation.
During the operation, officers recovered several suspected stolen electronic items, including assorted television sets, a computer CPU, and a pressure cooker.
The recovered items have been secured as evidence, and the suspect remains in police custody pending arraignment.
Earlier, a crackdown on highway robbers along the Eldoret–Malaba highway landed two suspects in police custody, following a stealthy operation by officers from Matete and Webuye Police Stations.
The duo, were believed to be part of a ruthless gang that has been preying on innocent motorists in a series of late-night ambushes that left travelers terrified and property lost.
After days of discreet surveillance, detectives finally moved in, arresting the suspects before they could stage their next attack.
Upon interrogation, the pair led officers to their hideouts along River Nzoia and Nabuyola Village, where a cache of stolen goods was recovered.
Among the items retrieved were three 6kg gas cylinders, assorted electronics, and vehicle batteries, all believed to have been looted from motorists attacked along the busy highway.
The suspects are in custody as officers wrap up investigations ahead of their arraignment.
Meanwhile, security patrols have been intensified along the Eldoret–Malaba highway as officers tighten the noose on the remaining gang members.
