Jubilee party presidential candidate Fred Matiang'i engages former President Uhuru Kenyatta during a grassroots leaders' meeting in Murang'a on November 7, 2025.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has declared his unwavering support for his former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, citing his leadership capacity rather than tribal affiliation.
Speaking during the Jubilee Party delegates meeting held at Thika Greens in Murang’a county, Uhuru said Matiang’i had demonstrated exceptional capability and commitment to public service.
“I’m supporting Matiang’i because of his capacity, not his tribe. In fact, I don’t even know his home; I’ve never visited him, but he is a hardworking leader,” said Uhuru.
The endorsement drew attention not only because of Uhuru’s standing in the party but also because Matiang’i’s tenure in two of the government’s most demanding ministries earned him a reputation as a tough, results-driven manager.

Appointed Education Cabinet Secretary in 2015, Matiang’i moved swiftly to reform the examination system, which had been plagued by widespread irregularities.
He introduced strict security measures in the handling and administration of national exams, digital tracking of papers and a faster, more transparent marking process.
His uncompromising stance restored public confidence in the credibility of Kenya’s examination system and earned him praise from across the political divide.
When he later took over the Interior docket in 2017, Matiang’i’s no-nonsense approach continued to define his leadership.
He spearheaded far-reaching security and governance reforms, overseeing major crackdowns on criminal networks and enforcing discipline within state agencies.
His directive to streamline the public transport sector and regulate betting operations reflected a broader effort to promote order and accountability.
Although his firm methods sometimes drew criticism from rights groups and sections of the opposition, Matiang’i was widely seen as one of the most effective ministers in Uhuru’s administration — a leader who delivered results and was unafraid to take tough decisions.
At Thika Greens, Uhuru urged leaders from the Mount Kenya region to abandon divisive politics and instead focus on unity and mutual respect.
He warned against insults targeting fellow leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“We won’t allow any Jubilee member to abuse leaders, including Gachagua or anyone else. We need peace in this country,” he stated.
The former Head of State reiterated that Jubilee remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and fairness nationwide.
He assured delegates that the party’s 2027 nominations would be transparent and free from favoritism.
Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni echoed Uhuru’s sentiments, affirming that the party fully supports Fred Matiang’i and will rally behind his leadership moving forward.
