The Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam has reassured Kenyans living in Tanzania that their safety and welfare remain its top priority.

The mission confirmed that it is in regular communication with Tanzanian authorities to ensure that Kenyan nationals are safe and protected.

“The welfare and safety of Kenyans residing in Tanzania remains a top priority for the Mission,” the High Commission said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Mission announced that it has resumed normal operations. This follows the lifting of the curfew and restrictions imposed after Tanzania’s General Elections.

“The Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam wishes to give reassurance to the Kenyan Community in Tanzania that the Mission has resumed normal operations following the lifting of the curfew and the restrictions put in place after the General elections in Tanzania.”

Kenyans in Tanzania have been encouraged to continue with their lawful daily activities.

The Mission also urged them to remain calm and vigilant, observe local laws, and report any security concerns or distress cases.

It stated that advisories and updates will be shared through official communication channels and community networks when necessary.

The update followed concerns raised by Human Rights Organisation Vocal Africa, which urged Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to look into the whereabouts of two Kenyan citizens reportedly missing in Tanzania after the country’s recent post-election unrest.

In a letter addressed to the Principal Secretary, the organisation expressed concern over the safety and welfare of the two individuals. One of them was said to have died during the unrest, while the other was allegedly detained and remains unaccounted for in Dar es Salaam.

According to the organisation, the first individual, described as a teacher based in Dar es Salaam, was reportedly involved in an incident on October 29 when violence was said to have erupted in parts of Tanzania. Vocal Africa noted that the family has been unable to trace his body, which they believe had earlier been taken to a morgue.

The second Kenyan was said to have been travelling to Zanzibar for work when, according to the organisation, he may have been taken into custody in Dar es Salaam on October 31.

Vocal Africa indicated that it was concerned the individual may not have had access to legal counsel or family communication, adding that this has heightened fears for his well-being.

The organisation appealed to Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage Tanzanian authorities to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the two cases and to ensure that the individuals, if in custody, are treated in line with international human rights principles and regional cooperation frameworks.

“Your timely intervention will not only safeguard the rights of these two Kenyan citizens but will also demonstrate Kenya’s commitment to protecting its nationals abroad, especially in moments of crisis,” the letter, signed by Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, stated.

The group further noted that delayed action could deepen the distress experienced by the affected families and complicate efforts to obtain clarity and closure.
