The newly appointed ambassadors, high commissioners, and consuls general have been urged to uphold integrity, professionalism, and patriotism as they prepare to take up postings abroad.

Political and Diplomatic Affairs Director-General Josphat Maikara issued the call during the closing ceremony of a two-week pre-departure training at the Foreign Service Academy in Nairobi.

Maikara praised the envoys for their dedication throughout the programme, reminding them that they will play a critical role in advancing Kenya’s interests, strengthening bilateral relations, and safeguarding the well-being of Kenyans abroad.

“You carry the responsibility of promoting Kenya’s values, protecting our interests, and representing the aspirations of our people. Integrity, professionalism, and patriotism must guide all your actions,” Maikara said.

The training covered key pillars of modern diplomacy, including Kenya’s foreign policy agenda, economic and commercial diplomacy, diaspora engagement, protocol, etiquette, and mission security.

Maikara emphasised the importance of continuous learning, teamwork, and ethical conduct, noting that the success of Kenya’s diplomatic service hinges on the calibre and discipline of its envoys.

Foreign Service Academy Director-General Patrick Wamoto also urged the diplomats to remain adaptive to rapidly shifting global dynamics, stressing innovation and responsiveness in addressing emerging geopolitical and economic challenges.

The pre-departure programme is part of the Ministry’s ongoing capacity-building efforts to prepare envoys for the increasingly complex and competitive diplomatic environment.

Among those appointed by President William Ruto are seasoned diplomats and senior public servants.

They are Anthony Muchiri, Former Chairman of the Public Service Commission and a former diplomat in Cuba, who will serve as Ambassador to Ankara, Turkey and Lucy Kiruthu and Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who heads to Bangkok, Thailand.

Kiruthu is recognised for her strong negotiation skills and strategic leadership, particularly in revamping the Kenya Foreign Policy.

Others are Joseph Masila, former Head of the Middle East Desk, who will serve as Ambassador to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Edwin Afande, who will serve as Ambassador to Austria; and Henry Wambuma, former Acting Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was appointed High Commissioner to Bujumbura, Burundi.

Afande will leverage his experience in bilateral and multilateral relations, while Wambuna brings valuable experience in diplomatic protocol and high-level coordination.

Former Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Chepngetich Bore has been named High Commissioner to Namibia, where her extensive experience in civil service will enhance Kenya’s engagement in Southern Africa.
