Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo has sent his heartfelt condolences to families affected by the devastating landslides that struck Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County, on Friday evening following heavy rainfall.

Kiptoo joined Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and other government officials at the Eldoret Airstrip to receive the bodies of those who perished in the tragedy.

So far, 21 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 30 others remain missing.

“It is one of the saddest moments for our county. Our hearts go out to the families affected by this devastating tragedy,” Kiptoo said, assuring that the government is working round the clock to support ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.

He further noted that emergency teams have been mobilised to provide humanitarian assistance and aid to the affected families.

Later, the PS visited survivors admitted to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to check on their progress and wish them a quick recovery.

He commended the medical team led by Phillip Kirwa for their swift and professional response.

“I sincerely thank the MTRH medical team and all first responders who continue to offer critical support during this difficult time,” he said, adding that the government remains in prayer and solidarity with all those affected.

President William Ruto also sent his message of condolence, expressing sympathy to the bereaved families and assuring them of continued government support in the ongoing search and rescue operations.

“Our prayers are with the families affected by the devastating landslide in Marakwet East. The government is providing all necessary assistance as emergency teams continue to respond to the disaster,” the President said.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that the bodies of the victims were received at the Eldoret Airstrip on Saturday evening.

He said search and rescue operations would resume Sunday morning with support from the military, police, and community volunteers.

“We are working with utmost urgency to coordinate rescue efforts, extend humanitarian assistance, and stand with families affected by this disaster,” Murkomen said.

He revealed that 25 people with serious injuries had been airlifted to Eldoret for specialised treatment, while those with minor injuries were attended to locally.

Murkomen added that preparations are underway to dispatch more food and non-food relief items to the affected areas, with military and police helicopters on standby to deliver supplies.

“I wish to thank all organisations, individuals, and government agencies, including the county government, for their fast response and cooperation,” he said.

Authorities have urged residents living near seasonal rivers and landslide-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds as heavy rains persist in the region.
