A police officer attached to the General Service Unit’s elite Recce Squad died after being electrocuted while washing his bicycle at their camp in Mugutha, Juja, Kiambu County.

Constable Benedict Oduori was reportedly cleaning his bicycle using an electric washing machine within the Kimbo camp when the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Police said his colleagues saw him collapse while engaged in the cleaning task and rushed to his aid, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He succumbed to his injuries while being attended to.

The officer’s body was later taken to the mortuary, where an autopsy confirmed he had suffered severe burns caused by electrocution.

Police added that his family was present during the postmortem.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. His colleagues described Oduori as a hardworking and dedicated officer who was deeply committed to his duties.

Recce officers are considered among the most skilled within the National Police Service and are often deployed in special and high-risk operations across the country.

In Homa Bay County, police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman, Mercy Achieng Onyango, whose body was found inside a friend’s house in Kendu Bay.

The cause of death was not immediately established, and the body was taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination and further investigations.

Meanwhile, in the Nyatike area of Migori County, a man identified as Fredrick Omondi, 30, was found dead near a gold mining shaft.

Police said the body had a fractured right thigh, deep head cut, and a broken left leg. Preliminary reports indicated that Omondi may have accidentally fallen into the mining shaft. Other miners retrieved the body before alerting the police.

The body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.

Police noted that such fatalities are common in gold mining areas, where calls for stricter safety measures remain unheeded.

In a separate incident, a 12-year-old herder was seriously injured by an explosive device in Kamanga Hills, Samburu County.
