Arsenal Fan TV (AFTV), the world’s largest football fan network, has joined the global community in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

AFTV remembered Raila not just as a statesman, but as a devoted football enthusiast and proud Arsenal supporter.

In a heartfelt message posted on its social media platforms, AFTV expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the veteran leader, who died on Wednesday in India.

“Everyone at AFTV is deeply saddened by the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” the message read. “As a passionate Arsenal supporter and a friend to our community, his warmth and commitment inspired many.”

AFTV, known for its massive global following and vibrant fan content, praised Raila for being more than just a political icon, noting that his love for the game and his support for Arsenal left a lasting impact on fans both in Kenya and abroad.

“Raila’s legacy will live on, not only among Arsenal fans but across Kenya, where his leadership and love for the game touched countless lives. Rest in peace, Mr. Odinga. Thank you for being an incredible part of the Arsenal family.”

Raila’s deep connection with football was well known to Kenyans.

Whether in stadiums or political rallies, the seasoned leader never hid his passion for the sport.

His dedication to Arsenal FC often made headlines, as he was fond of analysing their matches and joking about the team’s fortunes — or misfortunes—with the same seriousness he brought to national affairs.

Back home, Raila was a long-time supporter of Gor Mahia FC, one of Kenya’s most successful and historic football clubs. He frequently referred to himself as Gor Mahia’s number one fan and often attended their matches, proudly donning the team’s green and white colours.

But his connection to football went beyond fandom. Raila often spoke of football as a tool for unity and youth empowerment. He pushed for more investment in sports infrastructure, grassroots leagues, and talent development programmes, believing that football could help transform lives and bridge political and social divides.

In the wake of his death, tributes have poured in from across the sporting world, with players, coaches, and fans alike remembering him as a leader who championed not just politics, but passion, people, and the power of sport.

As Raila is laid to rest this Sunday in Bondo, his love for football — from local pitches to Premier League stadiums — remains a cherished part of his enduring legacy.
