“Now that we have successfully retained the regional title, our focus shifts to the nationals. We have been working hard. We promise to do the same in Mombasa,” Juma said.
Sikri retained the men’s and women’s volleyball titles. In the women’s final, they beat Keroka Technical Training Institute in straight sets of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-15. The men’s team overcame neighbours Mawego National Polytechnic 3-1 in an entertaining final.
Kitutu Masaba Technical and Training Institute from Nyamira County won the women’s football title after a 1-0 victory over Omuga Technical and Vocational Training College. In the men’s football final, Mawego National Polytechnic were declared champions after a 0-0 draw with hosts Siala. A pitch invasion by fans prevented a penalty shootout, leading organisers to award the win to Mawego.
Mawego were crowned men’s handball champions after a 23-18 victory over Rarieda Technical Training Institute. The then-defending champions Bondo Technical and Training Institute were eliminated in the quarterfinals. However, Bondo retained the women’s handball title with a 15-12 win over Mawego.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba reiterated the government’s commitment to nurturing sports and talent in learning institutions. He urged students to think of sports as a potential source of income.
The three-day event brought together over 2,400 students from 36 technical institutions from Migori, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Siaya and Homa Bay counties. The regional champions qualified for the national championships in Mombasa.
