On the Radar

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) will hold a media roundtable to discuss the newly gazetted Energy and Petroleum Regulations.

These regulations are central to realising the country’s universal energy access target of 100 per cent by 2030, advancing Kenya’s Paris Agreement commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 32 per cent by 2030, and ensuring a transparent, efficient, and sustainable energy and petroleum sector.

The forum will provide insights into what the regulations mean for Kenya’s energy sector, enhance understanding of their provisions, and support well-informed public reporting.

The Petroleum Regulations gazetted between March and May 2025 include those on importation, business licensing, petroleum road transportation, common user facilities, information and statistics, lubricants, retail dispensing sites, liquefied petroleum gas, and product quality management.

The forum will provide an opportunity for direct interactions with EPRA leadership and technical experts, who will highlight implications of the regulations for the energy and petroleum sector, businesses, and the public.

MPs to meet matatu owners over unpaid insurance claims

The National Assembly's Public Petitions Committee will meet the Matatu Owners Association and the Association of Kenya Insurers over concerns regarding the Insurance Regulatory Authority’s handling of public transport operators’ insurance claims.

The meeting is scheduled for 11.30 am at the Mini Chamber, County Hall.

Public transport operators have filed a petition seeking the government’s intervention over what they describe as delays and non-settlement of insurance claims.

The petition raises concerns about three insurance providers said to have failed to honour valid claims submitted by matatu operators.

The operators also cite instances where the firms allegedly did not provide legal representation, a lapse they say has resulted in costly court rulings against them.

According to the petitioners, despite meeting all policy requirements — including the timely and full payment of insurance premiums — the insurers have not fulfilled their obligations.

They further note that at least 4,000 public service vehicles operating in Kenya’s Lower Eastern region are currently facing court cases arising from road accidents.

MPs to meet Postmaster General over Postal Corporation of Kenya turnaround strategy

Departmental Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation will hold a meeting with the Postmaster General, Postal Corporation of Kenya, on the business turnaround strategy at 10 am, Bunge Tower

The Postal Corporation of Kenya is undergoing a significant restructuring, including asset sales and potential equity partnerships with e-commerce firms, to address its Sh7 billion debt and struggling cash flow.

The strategy focuses on digital transformation by modernising ICT infrastructure, expanding the Express Mail Services (EMS) courier division, and scaling up Posta Pay for digital financial services to leverage the growing e-commerce market.

Posta is reportedly planning to sell land parcels to clear its substantial Sh7 billion debt, a key step in its financial turnaround strategy.

It is one of six state corporations undergoing government-ordered restructuring to improve self-reliance and profitability in a competitive digital market.
