Naivas Supermarkets has announced a leadership transition that marks a new chapter in its 35-year journey, with Andreas von Paleske set to take over as chief executive officer effective November 1, 2025.
He succeeds founder and outgoing CEO David Kimani, who has led the retailer from its humble beginnings to become Kenya’s leading supermarket chain.
The announcement, made to coincide with Naivas' 35th anniversary celebrations, was described as a moment that blends legacy with renewal.
“Today, at a pivotal moment in our company's history, we celebrate our 35-year legacy while confidently stepping into our next chapter,” the company said.
The retailer paid glowing tribute to Kimani’s leadership, crediting him for transforming Naivas from a family business into a national retail icon.
“Under David's entrepreneurial spirit and distinguished leadership, Naivas grew from a family business into a national icon. His vision steered us to a milestone of over 100 stores nationwide, touching the lives of millions of Kenyans,” the statement read.
Kimani’s decision to step down coincides with the company’s 35-year milestone — a move the company said demonstrates confidence in the systems and leadership structures he helped establish.
“David's decision to transition at this 35-year milestone reflects his confidence in the team and the enduring systems he has built,” the retailer stated.
The company expressed “deep gratitude for David Kimani's visionary leadership,” adding that “we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his immense contribution and are pleased that he will continue to guide the business alongside the Mukuha family.”
Naivas described the leadership transition as a deliberate process grounded in strategic foresight.
“This transition is a testament to a succession plan built on stability, strategic foresight, and profound respect for the culture that has made Naivas Kenya's leading retail chain,” the company said.
Introducing von Paleske as the incoming CEO, Naivas noted that he is not new to the business.
“We are not welcoming a newcomer but elevating a proven leader who has been integral to our recent success. Andreas is not just a successor, he is a continuation of a winning strategy,” Naivas said.
Von Paleske has served as the retailer’s Chief of Strategy for the past eight years after being personally recruited by Kimani.
“He has been a co-pilot in our most significant growth phase,” the company said.
The statement highlighted von Paleske’s broad experience in the retail and consumer sectors.
It said he boasts of over 25 years of extensive experience in the retail and consumer sectors, with a background that spans investment, operations, and strategic development.
Naivas said the leadership change is anchored on continuity rather than disruption.
“This transition is designed for seamless continuity. Andreas knows our business inside and out, and he is deeply committed to building upon the strong foundation laid by David. He is a leader who respects our past and is uniquely equipped to architect our future,” the statement added.
“The entire Board and leadership team are united in supporting this transition. We remain unwavering in our commitment to delivering exceptional value to our customers, strengthening our partnerships, and continuing our investment in the communities we call home,” the company said.
Naivas called on partners and customers to embrace the change.
“Please join us in thanking David Kimani for his visionary journey and in warmly welcoming Andreas von Paleske as he steps into this role. The future of retail in Kenya is bright, and we are excited to build it with you.”
