A road accident involving a bus occurred on Tuesday evening at Waruku, along the road leading to Gatina in Dagoretti North Constituency, Nairobi.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 30 passengers were injured in the accident.
Emergency response teams from the area and nearby hospitals rushed to the scene to assist victims.
Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts and called for calm as emergency teams continue their operations.
“I’m deeply saddened by the unfortunate accident that occurred this evening at Waruku, on the road leading to Gatina, involving a bus. The hardworking parents left home this morning to seek their families’ daily bread but will, sadly, not get home,” she said in a statement on Facebook.
“My heart goes out to all the affected families during this painful moment. The rescue process is still ongoing, and we continue to pray for those injured and rushed to hospital for treatment.”
Elachi thanked the medical team and local emergency responders for their swift action.
“As a community, let us come together to comfort and support the families affected by this tragedy. As your area MP, Tuko pamoja,” she added.
Police have launched investigations to determine the cause of
the accident, as rescue and recovery operations continue late into the evening.
Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, who visited
the scene of the accident, urged drivers to exercise maximum caution to prevent
similar tragedies.
“This evening, I received a distress call from a person in the Waruku area
reporting a serious road accident where a bus had plunged into a river, leaving
many victims trapped and injured. Our County Emergency Ambulance team responded
immediately, and I also visited the scene personally. It was heartbreaking,” he
said in a statement on X.
“Let us prioritise safety and avoid speeding or reckless driving to prevent
such tragic incidents. Every life matters,” he added.
According to him, county
ambulances, police, and Red Cross volunteers worked jointly to rescue the
injured and transport them to nearby hospitals.
Kilileshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai called on the Kenya Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance to intervene.
“We have a major accident in Waruku. A 33-seater bus has plunged into the river. We are asking for rescue services,” he said.
Images on the ground showed rescuers and bystanders working frantically to help the injured.
Some victims lay on rocks and along the riverbank, while others are being carried to safety.
The bus, tipped onto its side and was partially submerged in the water, with people clambering over it in an effort to evacuate passengers trapped inside.
Police said they have intensified operations to address accidents in the country.
