Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Generation Z to register as voters in large numbers as the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise resumes on Monday, September 29.

Speaking during a church service in Kajiado County, Gachagua praised the youth for their recent civic engagement and urged them to take the next critical step—registering to vote.

“The tool of change is the voting card,” he said.

“We appeal to young people across the country to register as voters. They have spoken out strongly in recent months, but real change will be achieved at the ballot.”

Gachagua emphasised that meaningful transformation requires active participation in the electoral process, adding that young Kenyans should take the lead.

“The installation of a people’s government will be on the ballot. The country is counting on you,” he said.

“You have shown courage and determination, but you must take a step further.”

Turning to Kenya’s middle class, Gachagua urged greater participation in elections, noting their limited involvement in past voter turnouts.

“They cannot stay at home and expect change to come,” he said.

He was accompanied at the church service by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa.

His remarks came as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirmed that the CVR exercise would resume on Monday.

In a public notice, the commission urged all eligible Kenyans to register at their nearest constituency offices, except in areas currently conducting by-elections.

“The commission encourages all unregistered citizens to take advantage of the ongoing exercise and register early,” IEBC stated.

The CVR exercise will allow for new voter registration, correction or updating of details, transfer of registration to a new polling station, and verification of voter information.

To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged 18 or above, possess a valid national ID or passport, and not have been previously registered as voters.

In addition, they must not have been convicted of an election offence in the last five years and must not have been declared to be of unsound mind.

The IEBC has set a target of registering 6.3 million new voters, with a significant portion expected to come from young people, making Generation Z a key demographic in the 2027 General Election.
