Police in Navakholo Sub-County in Kakamega have launched an intensive manhunt after a 10-year-old boy was killed and several houses burned in a suspected murder-arson incident in Mungaha Village, Bushiri Market, on the night of September 25, 2025.

According to a report filed at Makunga Police Station and Eshilakwe Police Post, the incident was relayed at 8:42 pm by Butsotso North Chief Wycliff Kombo.

The chief reported that the Grade 4 pupil at Bushiri Primary School was allegedly lured by a neighbour before being assaulted to death.

Police said the boy’s body was later found within the suspect’s compound with visible injuries to the head, legs, and hands.

Officers from Eshilakwe Police Post, accompanied by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) personnel, rushed to the scene.

Preliminary findings indicated that the child had been seen being called by the suspect earlier in the evening.

When his lifeless body was discovered along the roadside, angry residents reportedly carried it back to the suspect’s compound in protest.

"It was established that the suspect was spotted calling the deceased in the evening before his lifeless body was found lying along the road, which prompted the irate members of the public to carry the body back to the suspect compound and set on fire five semi-permanent houses," the report stated.

Property of unknown value was destroyed in the process.

By the time police arrived, the suspect and his family had fled to an unknown location.

The motive for the killing remains unclear.

The crime scene was documented, and the boy’s body was removed to Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Navakholo Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO) confirmed that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspect.

Police are expected to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
