A major operation in Kisumu has led to the arrest of eight police officers
in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle that had earlier been recovered
and parked at a police station yard.
The early morning arrests were carried out by a
team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nairobi
Headquarters, working closely with the County Criminal Investigations Officer
(CCIO) and the County Police Commander (CPC) Kisumu. The officers are currently
being held at Kisumu Central Police Station pending further interrogation.
According to a police report, the matter stems
from the theft of a black Toyota Land Cruiser V8, which was stolen at the Maseno
Police Station parking yard.
The vehicle had initially been recovered after being found abandoned at
Maseno Shopping Centre and was taken to the station yard for safekeeping.
However, it later went missing under unclear
circumstances, sparking investigations that have since roped in multiple
security agencies.
“This case is under active investigation by
DCI Nairobi Headquarters and the CCIO Kisumu. The officers are in custody as
part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances that led to the disappearance
of the vehicle,” read part of the police report.
The incident has raised concern within the
security sector, highlighting the challenges of accountability and discipline
within the ranks.
Meanwhile, the vehicle theft incident remains under probe, with
investigators working to trace how the recovered car vanished from a secure
police compound.
