Kiprono Cheburet has won the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the upcoming Baringo senatorial by-election after securing a decisive victory in the party primaries.
According to a statement posted on the party’s X page, Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes, defeating eight other contenders in the nomination exercise held earlier this week.
“Mr Kiprono Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes in the UDA party nomination contest to clinch the party ticket for the November 27 Baringo Senatorial by-election,” the statement read.
His closest rival, Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, managed 30,897 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo Korir came third with 23,613.
The remaining aspirants trailed significantly, with Sylas Kipkogey Tochim getting 769 votes, Evans Kiprotich Mundulel Bett 735, and Joseph Rotich Cherutoi 172. Isaiah Kipkoros Kipkurnet secured 141 votes, Linus Musa Kamket 118, and Reuben Chirchir Chepsongol 82.
Cheburet’s victory positions him as the ruling party’s flagbearer in the November 27 poll, which was triggered by the death of Senator William Cheptumo.
The contest attracted considerable attention both locally and nationally, given Baringo’s strategic importance in Rift Valley politics.
Observers noted the smooth conduct of the primaries, pointing to the large turnout and the wide margin of Cheburet’s win as indicators of strong grassroots backing.
Although UDA’s top leadership has not issued a formal statement, insiders expressed satisfaction with the process, highlighting transparency in tallying and robust participation as key successes.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that preparations for the poll are underway, including security arrangements, logistics and voter education efforts.
With nine aspirants vying for the UDA ticket, the nomination exercise underscored the high stakes of the contest. The by-election is widely seen as a test of UDA’s dominance in the Rift Valley stronghold
