The Kisumu National Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely following days of student unrest, marked by demonstrations, disruptions, and class boycotts.
In an internal memo dated September 19, 2025, Chief Principal Catherine Kelonye announced that the institution’s Interim Council had resolved to close the polytechnic with immediate effect.
The decision was reached during a council meeting held on the same day, citing mounting tensions that began on Monday, September 15, 2025.
The unrest is reported to have stemmed from concerns raised by the Kisumu National Polytechnic Students Association (KINAPOSA).
The group has alleged various grievances against the administration, claims that have not yet been independently verified and are the subject of ongoing discussions.
“All trainees are advised to maintain peace and stay away from the Polytechnic premises pending further communication on the dates when classes will resume,” read the memo signed by the Chief Principal.
The council expressed regret over the disruption caused by the closure, assuring parents, guardians, and trainees that the grievances raised would be investigated and addressed expeditiously to restore normalcy.
“The Council affirms that the inconvenient circumstances are highly regrettable and wishes to assure all the affected trainees, parents and guardians that the concerns raised will be investigated and addressed with a view to resume normalcy,” the memo added.
Meanwhile, staff members have been directed to continue reporting for duty until further notice.
The closure adds to a growing list of student unrest incidents witnessed in higher learning institutions across the country, where accusations of poor governance, inadequate facilities, and alleged mismanagement have often sparked protests.
