Learning at Masii Boys High School in Mwala, Machakos county, has been disrupted after a section of students was sent home following unrest.

The school administration on Friday released some learners, among them Form Two, Three and Four students, after a series of incidents that raised concern among teachers and local authorities.

Sources within the institution told the Star that the students allegedly made repeated but unsuccessful attempts to set ablaze a dormitory.

The failed arson attempts are said to have taken place at least three times this week, prompting swift action by the administration to avert potential danger.

Mwala Deputy County Commissioner David Tegutwa confirmed the disruption, saying the boys demanded to be released.

“Yes, learning has been interrupted at Masii Boys High School. I’m told the boys demanded to be released to go home for ‘half term’,” Tegutwa said in a phone interview.

He questioned the timing of the unrest.

“What could make the students suddenly not ready to learn barely three weeks into the term?” he asked.

The affected students have been sent home for an unspecified period as investigations continue.

Education officials are expected to intervene and provide direction on the next steps.

The incident at Masii Boys came just hours after a separate fire broke out at Mbooni Boys High School in neighbouring Makueni county.

According to sources, the blaze, reported early Friday, completely destroyed a dormitory, leaving some students without a place to sleep.

Personal items including bedding, clothing and metal boxes were reduced to ashes.

There were no casualties reported.

Firefighters from the Makueni County Government, supported by Kenya Red Cross personnel, responded to the scene, containing the fire and assisting in rescue operations.

The two incidents have raised fresh concerns about student unrest and safety in boarding schools.
