Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has called for urgent investigations into the killing of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down on Tuesday evening in what police described as a targeted attack.

According to preliminary reports, the 54-year-old advocate was driving along the Galleria–Brookhouse stretch towards Ongata Rongai when a gunman on a motorcycle pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire.

Mbobu was fatally wounded in the shooting, which has sparked shock and outrage across the country.

Kingi described the killing as a “cold-blooded and heinous act,” urging the police and other relevant agencies to move quickly to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“As the nation grapples with the horror of this incident, I strongly urge the police and relevant authorities to carry out swift, thorough, and transparent investigations. The perpetrators of this heinous act must be brought to justice without delay,” he said.

The Speaker praised Mbobu as a brilliant legal mind, an accomplished academic, and a dedicated public servant.

“Wakili Kyalo Mbobu was a distinguished Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a brilliant legal scholar, and a dedicated public servant. He notably served as Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, where he upheld justice with integrity and impartiality,” Kingi said.

He also shared a personal tribute, recalling his time as Mbobu’s student at the University of Nairobi’s Parklands Campus.

“I was privileged to be one of his students, where we greatly benefited from his intellectual mentorship, deep legal insight, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law,” Kingi added.

Kingi extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late lawyer, urging them to find strength in the legacy he leaves behind.

He joined the legal fraternity in mourning Mbobu, noting that the killing was not only a loss to his family but also to the nation.

The murder has renewed calls for stronger measures to protect legal practitioners and other professionals who play critical roles in governance and justice.

Kingi emphasised that swift investigations would restore public confidence and assure Kenyans that justice can prevail even in the face of such tragedies.
