Narok Senator Ledama OleKina has said that the constructions work for the Narok international airport has begun.
He said the contractor has built 80 per cent of the structures for staff who will be constructing the airport.
According to him, there has been progress with several setbacks still holding them behind.
“Narok airport will be international because the people who come to our county are not just local people. Today, we have thousands of tourists who visit Narok. Narok is going to be building the first International airport in South Rift,” he said in a statement on X.
“The contractor has built 80 per cent structures where the men and women who will be contracting this airport will be living.”
He has called on Kenya Power to expedite the process of ensuring availability of electricity to ensure the project moves at the expected speed.
On May 8, 2025, President William Ruto launched the groundbreaking for constructing the Narok International airport pledging to open the international airport in March 2026.
Ruto said both the county and national governments will commit half the money each to fund the project.
He said the move to construct an airport in Narok will bolster tourism and business in the county, ultimately ending poverty.
“You need an airport because the Maasai Mara is an important place. You need an international airport here in Narok. Today, I am going to launch the construction of an airport in Narok. The county and national government will share the responsibility of the construction,” Ruto said.
“The national and county governments will both give half the money. We shall make sure that Narok becomes a tourist and business hub to reduce poverty," Ruto said.
The Sh700 million project, jointly funded by national and county governments, aims to transform access to the world-famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve and boost the region's tourism economy.
The airport will be located 12 kilometers from Narok's Central Business District and 79 kilometers from Maasai Mara's Sekenani Gate.
The new facility will span 329 acres (133 hectares) and feature a completely reconstructed runway.
The first phase includes transforming the existing murram airstrip into a 1.5-kilometer asphalt runway, 30 meters wide, complete with an apron and taxiways. Future plans include extending the runway to 1.8 kilometers.
The roof is designed to accommodate 200 solar panels.
