Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma has appealed to President William Ruto to grant Meru city status before the 2027 General Election, saying residents are eager to see the county elevated to join Kenya’s top urban centres.

Speaking at the State House on Friday during a meeting hosted by the Head of State for Meru grassroots leaders, Governor Mutuma said the community has long desired the upgrade and is looking up to the President to make it a reality.

“We pray and request a declaration of Meru as the next city in Kenya,” Mutuma said, adding that the people of Meru were united in their plea.

“These people don’t want to hear any other city being pronounced before Meru. They are pleading that before 2027, and because this requires your blessings, you lift our status at Meru. Those required things expected that we are yet to do, we seek your support so that Meru becomes a city, and we will be grateful as a community.”

The Governor noted that city status would not only boost Meru’s image but also unlock opportunities in investment, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

He maintained that the county has made major strides in growth and deserves to be recognised alongside Kenya’s leading cities.

Mutuma also used the occasion to rally support for President Ruto, thanking him for welcoming local leaders to State House and affirming the community’s loyalty to his administration.

He said Meru County had demonstrated strong faith in the President during the 2022 General Election by delivering overwhelming votes, placing the county fourth nationally after Kiambu, Nairobi, and Nakuru.

“That support was not only political, it was a covenant of trust between our people and your leadership,” the Governor remarked.

“Looking ahead to 2027, Meru pledges to stand with you, even strongly determined to deliver an even greater mandate as a testimony of our confidence in your vision for Kenya.”

Governor Mutuma expressed optimism that city status for Meru would be a legacy project under the Kenya Kwanza administration, urging the President to consider the request as part of his broader development agenda for counties.

He assured the Head of State that the people of Meru remained fully committed to supporting government programs and working with his administration to realise national goals.
