FIFA President Gianni Infantino has arrived in Nairobi for the first time to attend the final match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), marking a historic moment for Kenyan football.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed said Infantino’s visit underscores the global recognition of Kenya’s successful hosting of the continental tournament.

“On behalf of the Kenyan football family, I warmly welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Kenya for the first time, as we gear up for the CHAN 2024 final,” Mohammed said in a statement.

“Kenya has captured the hearts of the world with our successful hosting of this tournament — today we celebrate that achievement together.”

Infantino is expected to join CAF President Patrice Motsepe, African football delegates and local officials at the finals.

The match concludes Kenya’s month-long hosting of the biennial continental tournament.

FKF further noted that the presence of top football leaders was a show of confidence in the country’s ability to stage major international events.

“The Football Kenya Federation is honoured to welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantino, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, and football leaders from across the continent to Nairobi for the CHAN 2024 final,” FKF stated.

“Kenya has proudly captured the hearts of Africa and the world with our successful hosting of this tournament, and today we stand tall as the continent unites in our capital city.”

Infantino has led the global football body for almost a decade.

In 2023, he made a surprise appearance at the opening game of the African Football League in Tanzania, a match that drew more than 60,000 spectators.

Although he has not visited the country, Infantino met with FKF President Mohammed during the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.

CHAN 2024 will hold its grand finale on Saturday at  Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where Morocco will attempt to win a record third title while debutants Madagascar look to complete a fairytale run.

The final will be preceded by a star-studded closing ceremony featuring performances by Eddy Kenzo, Zuchu and Savara, showcasing the cultural pride of the three co-host nations: Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Unfortunately, all the East African co-hosts bowed out in the quarter finals during last week's matches.
