President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that each Harambee Stars player secures a home, following the team’s exit from the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Speaking during a State House luncheon with the national team on Thursday, Ruto outlined the government-backed payment plan that will make the initiative affordable for the players.
Under the arrangement, each two-bedroom house, valued at Sh2 million under the Affordable Housing Programme, will be partially funded by the government.
“We will pay half of the amount, Sh1 million, and you pay the remaining Sh1 million," Ruto explained.
"Alternatively, we can provide a mortgage that you can pay over 20 years, which will cost about Sh2,000 to Sh3,000 a month. This makes it affordable.”
He emphasised that the deal involves the house only and not cash.
“There is no room for exchanging the house for money. There is only the house.”
The President also encouraged the players to select their preferred location, whether in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, or any other town where the initiative is being rolled out.
“I know the team has registered with Boma Yangu—so go ahead and choose the two-bedroom house in any town,” he said, reminding them of the flexibility under the programme.
As he outlined the housing plan, Ruto addressed the CHAN loss, acknowledging the team’s spirited performance.
“One friend of mine even told me I was responsible for Harambee Stars’ loss because I was absent from the field. For a moment, I thought maybe he was right. Maybe I should have been there in person to encourage these friends of mine. But I promise next time I will be there,” he said.
Ruto praised the squad for inspiring the nation, bringing Kenyans together across counties, disciplines, and workplaces, and making the country proud, especially as Kenya hosted a continental match for the first time in 40 years.
He stressed that the focus now is on preparing for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
“We know that AFCON is much more difficult, but we will be much more prepared this time round. Work with FKF as we build momentum towards 2027,” he said.
