Over 18,000 recruits are graduating after six-month training
In Summary
President William Ruto has arrived in Gigil, Nakuru County, to preside over the 89th National Youth Service (NYS) pass-out parade.
The much-anticipated ceremony had initially been scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, but was moved by a day to allow for final preparations.
Receiving the President were Nakuru governor Susan Kihika, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari and Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku. Over 18,000 recruits are graduating.
Last week, the Service Commandant, General James Tembur, supervised a dress rehearsal at the academy, where recruits showcased their readiness for the big day.
This year’s parade marks yet another significant milestone for the institution as it continues its transformation journey towards becoming a regional centre of excellence in training and youth empowerment.
The recruits are graduating after a six-month intensive training, having joined the academy in February this year.
The event will feature precision drills, parades, and demonstrations.
Over the years, NYS has expanded its mandate beyond paramilitary training to include technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills development, positioning young people to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The deadline for all applications is September 1, 2025.
