As the 2026 FIFA World Cup electrifies television screens across the globe, the streets of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu have transformed into vibrant battlegrounds of football fan loyalty.
With the national team, Harambee Stars, missing out on the global showpiece in the United States, local football enthusiasts have fiercely divided their allegiance among the tournament’s biggest icons.
A spot check across major viewing bases in the capital reveals that Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Argentina’s Lionel Messi, and France’s Kylian Mbappé remain the undisputed rulers of Kenyan football hearts.
From estate video dens, popularly known as vibandas, to upmarket sports bars, the debate over who reigns supreme has reached a fever pitch following an explosive opening round of fixtures.
For millions of local fans, the tournament represents a historic crossroads, featuring a generational passing of the torch.
At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to command a fanatical following across the country. His historic milestone as the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match during Portugal’s Group K opener against DR Congo sparked mass celebrations in Nairobi’s Eastlands area. Despite the match ending in a tense 1-1 draw, local "CR7" disciples remain unshaken.
"People talk about age, but Ronaldo transcends time," said Josphat Omwamba, a mechanic and lifelong football follower based in Shauri Moyo.
"Seeing him step out for a sixth World Cup tournament is a lesson in discipline for our own local athletes. He did not score against Congo, but his presence alone shifted the entire defence."
Ronaldo’s relentless work ethic and longevity strike a powerful chord with Kenyans who have followed his career for two decades. His upcoming Group K match against Uzbekistan is already projected to bring businesses to a standstill.
"We have already booked our spots at the local viewing base for Tuesday night," Omwamba added, wiping grease from his hands. "If Portugal wins, the entire market will be celebrating until morning."
Directly opposing the Ronaldo camp is an equally passionate legion of Lionel Messi supporters.
The 38-year-old Inter Miami maestro sent shockwaves through Kenyan social media following his masterclass performance against Algeria.
Messi’s stunning hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory not only levelled the all-time tournament scoring record but also marked his 200th international cap.
"There is no more debate after what we saw against Algeria," argued Mercy Chepngetich, a university student and sports blogger from Lang’ata.
"Messi gave us pure art on the pitch. Scoring three goals in a single World Cup match at his age proves he is the greatest to ever play the game."
The rivalry between the two fan bases shapes daily conversations in offices and public service vehicles across Nairobi.
"My older brother is a Ronaldo fanatic, so our house was incredibly tense over the weekend," Chepngetich laughed while scrolling through World Cup highlights on her phone. "Argentina looks unstoppable, and we are already planning for the Austria match on Monday night."
While the veteran duo divides the older generation, Kenya’s youth have overwhelmingly thrown their weight behind France’s Kylian Mbappé.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward lit up the tournament by scoring a brilliant brace in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal, officially becoming his country’s all-time leading goalscorer.
"The era of Messi and Ronaldo is beautiful, but the present and the future belong to Mbappé," stated Brian Ochieng, a youth football coach from Kibera.
"His speed is what every young player in Kenya wants to emulate. When he tore through the Senegal defence, the entire social hall erupted."
Mbappé’s explosive style and flashy celebrations have made French national jerseys a common fashion statement in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Local fans are highly captivated by his pursuit of the tournament’s all-time goalscoring record.
"He needs just three more goals to make history," Ochieng noted as he set up training cones for his youth team. "At just 27 years old, he is playing with the maturity of a veteran but the speed of a teenager."
As the group stages progress toward the high-stakes knockout rounds, the passion of Kenyan fans underscores the universal magic of the World Cup.
Even without a local team on the pitch, the tournament remains the definitive cultural centrepiece of the season, fuelled by the extraordinary exploits of three global giants.
