On the radar

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has scheduled Kericho Governor Erick Mutai’s impeachment hearing from Wednesday to Friday.

The governor insists he is innocent and claims the County Assembly, which has voted to impeach him for the second time in a year, denied him a fair hearing.

A total of 33 out of 47 MCAs supported the impeachment motion, citing multiple allegations, including the payment of Sh85.7 million to 46 companies for goods and services that were allegedly not supplied and for work not done.

Mutai has appealed to residents of the region to pray for him as he faces his accusers.

Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony filed the motion.

Senator Sifuna leads 20 lawmakers in a press conference on corruption allegations facing SHA

A group of youthful legislators under the banner Kenya Moja, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is expected to hold a press conference today with 20 lawmakers to present what they describe as concerns over alleged misuse of public funds at the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The briefing will take place at 8.30 am at the Media Centre, Red Cross Building, Parliament Buildings.

According to the legislators, several health facilities have been flagged in relation to practices such as “upcoding” (billing for more expensive procedures than those performed), falsifying medical records, submitting inflated or altered information, converting outpatient visits into inpatient claims, billing for services not rendered, and using ghost patients or duplicate claims across facilities.

Authorities have since suspended a number of hospitals pending investigations.

IEK to hold press briefing on 10,000 Engineers Employment campaign and upcoming peaceful march

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) will today hold a press briefing on its campaign to secure employment for 10,000 engineers and the upcoming peaceful march to protect local jobs.

The campaign raises concerns over unfair practices by some foreign firms, including underpaying Kenyan engineers, sidelining them after training, and awarding jobs to foreigners despite proven local competence.

IEK is calling for urgent reforms to safeguard the future of the engineering profession and ensure Kenyan engineers are given priority in national development.

The briefing will take place at 9 a.m. at the IEK Offices, Top Plaza, Kindaruma Road, Nairobi, and will be addressed by IEK President Shammah Kiteme.

Boniface Mwangi to lead press conference on Kenya’s future

Activists led by Boniface Mwangi will hold a press conference to celebrate, share and reflect on the future of Kenya.

The event will be held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi from 8 am.

Mwangi was recently charged with unlawful possession of ammunition over his alleged role in deadly anti-government protests in June.

He was accused of possessing unused tear gas canisters, a “7.62mm blank round”, two mobile phones, a laptop and notebooks.

His arrest triggered a wave of condemnation online, with the hashtag #FreeBonifaceMwangi going viral and rights groups condemning it.
